Percussion Ensemble
South Miami High
School is one of very few magnet schools in Dade county to offer
a percussion ensemble class. In
the percussion ensemble class, students explore a vast variety of percussion
instruments, ranging from pitched percussion to non-pitched percussion. The
class will also develop a greater appreciation and understanding of music
pertaining to percussion repertoire. It will focus on individual performance
growth specific to each instrument, with special attention to improving ones’
tone, articulation, intonation, phrasing, rudiments and technique. It will also
develop ensemble performance awareness of sight-reading rhythms, musical ideas, balance, blend, tuning,
melody, harmony, and produce percussionists who understand the complexity of
the massive family of instruments that is percussion. The percussion
ensemble participates in solo and ensembles every year and are exposed to a
large variety of repertoire. Percussionists who
participate in the percussion ensemble are also required to be in the marching
band and participate in the symphonic band. Members who want to be part of
the drum line in marching band have to audition for their instrument of choice.
